01 — Obscura: Site-Specific Abstract Sculpture Design

The design process of Obscura began by examining the role of the sculpture's placement within the space. The chosen location was a transitional axis opening from the entrance hall to the living area, meaning it was a space visible both from a distance and up close. Therefore, the goal was for the form to be legible from every angle, not requiring a single "correct viewing angle."

An abstract language was preferred over a figurative expression in the design. Volumes embracing each other, tapering as they rise and opening again, created a silhouette that conveys a sense of movement but is not unsettling. The ceiling height of the space and the door opening were decisive in the proportion study: the sculpture was conceived on a scale that would attract attention without overpowering the area.

A simple, dark-toned base platform separated the sculpture from the floor, allowing the artwork to be perceived like an exhibition object. This approach yields a calm but effective result that preserves the integrity of the space in custom-designed sculpture works used within residences.

02 — Coloring with Acrylic Paint and Surface Details

The surface coloring of Obscura was achieved with acrylic paint. Acrylic paint allows for a homogeneous and controlled color transition on the sculpture's surface; this is a significant advantage, especially in abstract forms consisting of curved and continuously changing volumes.

The aim of the color work was to create a deep appearance that reacts to light, rather than a monotonous surface. Warm metallic tones shimmer in the protruding areas of the form and darken in the concave areas, emphasizing the sculpture's volume. Thus, the artwork is perceived differently as the spot lighting and daylight in the space change; it ceases to be a static object and transforms into a surface that changes throughout the day.

The final state of the surface was completed in a tone that is harmonious with the wood coverings and neutral stone floor of the residence, yet distinct enough to have character. The coloring stage was completed by hand in the Evista Design Studio workshop, with each surface of the form checked individually.

03 — Integration of the Sculpture with the Space and Living Area

Obscura forms the visual center of the space where it is positioned. When viewed from the entrance, it creates a scene alongside the curved wooden wall, with a textured wall panel and hidden lighting in the background. When viewed from the living area, it is perceived as a vertical element defining the transition.

Scale and placement directly determine the outcome in such projects. A mass that is too large narrows the transition area, while a small object gets lost in a high-ceilinged volume. In Obscura, a balanced proportion was achieved by relating the height of the sculpture to the door opening; the dark-based platform provided both a physical and visual base for the artwork.

As a result, the artwork does not appear like a decorative product added later to the interior design scheme, but rather as an integral part of the project conceived from the beginning. This is precisely the difference that site-specific sculpture works create in residential projects: the space becomes not just furnished, but defined.

Using Custom-Designed Sculptures in Residential and Residence Projects

In residential and residence projects, interior design is often shaped by material, lighting, and furniture choices. However, what often gives a living space a personal character is a site-specific art object.
