01 — Site-Specific Face Sculpture Design for Artukbey Cafe

In the design phase of the project, the dimensions of the wall where the sculptures would be applied, the direction of lighting, and the viewing angles within the space were first evaluated. The minimalist and earth-toned atmosphere of the cafe indicated a simple and strong form rather than an ostentatious sculpture. In line with this, we adopted a soft design language that reduced the human face to only its basic lines, stripped of details.

The three pieces were conceived not as replicas of each other, but in different scales and at different placement heights. The central piece was designed with a closer and fuller form, while the side pieces were slightly turned to the side and had longer proportions, adding movement and depth to the composition. The edge transitions of the forms, which appear embedded in the surface, ensured that the sculptures formed an organic whole with the wall.

Closed eyes and calm expressions were a conscious choice: the aim was for an art object that attracts attention in a social space like a cafe but does not disturb, softening the environment rather than confronting the viewer. This approach highlights the most important advantage of site-specific sculpture design — the size, proportion, and expression are determined according to the space in a way that would not be possible with a ready-made product.

02 — Fiberglass Sculpture Production and Custom Textured Surface Application

All sculptures were produced as fiberglass. Fiberglass is one of the most suitable materials for wall-mounted sculpture projects because its lightweight structure allows large-scale forms to remain light. Its high durability provides long-lasting results in heavily used commercial spaces; details such as thin edge transitions and soft surface flows can also be cleanly achieved with this material.

The actual detail that determined the character of the project was the surface application. The sculptures were finished not with a shiny or smooth surface, but with a special textured surface reminiscent of the plastered wall texture of the space. This matte and slightly grainy texture prevents harsh light reflections on the surface; it softens the shadow transitions during the day and evening lighting, making the volume of the forms more clearly discernible.

The choice of texture and color also prevented the sculptures from appearing as if they had been added later to the space. In fiberglass sculpture production, surface treatment is as decisive as the form itself; in the Artukbey Cafe project, this detail was the main element that allowed the three pieces to be perceived as a single whole with the wall.

03 — Integration of Sculptures with the Space and Brand Identity

The sculpture group was positioned according to the cafe's circulation and placed to create a focal point perceptible from the moment one enters the space. The composition, covering a large part of the wall, creates a self-contained scene together with the wooden element below and the directional spot lighting. The top-down lighting creates soft shadows on the textured surface, making the depth of the forms even more prominent in the evening.

Scale was a decisive design choice here. A smaller application would have been lost on the wall, while a more dense composition would have disturbed the calm character of the space. The chosen proportion allows the sculptures to make a strong impression both from a distance and up close.

In commercial spaces, such an art object is not merely a decorative layer. These wall sculptures produced for Artukbey Cafe became a distinguishing element that forms the visual memory of the brand; they created a natural focal point that allows guests to remember the space and share it on social media.
